Discover Bhandara District: The Lake District of Maharashtra

Bhandara, the jewel of the Vidarbha region, is a land of immense natural beauty, rich agricultural heritage, and historical significance. Known as the “Lake District of Maharashtra” for its thousands of small lakes (Talaos) that dot the landscape, our district is a testament to the harmony between nature and human endeavor.

Geographical Overview

  • Area and Population: Bhandara district covers a geographical expanse of 3,716.65 sq. km. (3,89,000 hectares). According to the 2001 census, it is home to a population of 11,36,146 people.
  • Climate: The district experiences an average annual rainfall of 1330.20 mm, which sustains its agriculture-based economy.
  • Strategic Location: The district headquarters, Bhandara city, is strategically situated on the bustling Mumbai-Kolkata National Highway No. 6, making it a key hub for transport and commerce.
  • Boundaries:
    • North: Bordered by Balaghat and Chhindwara districts (Madhya Pradesh), with the Wainganga and Bawanthadi rivers forming a natural boundary.
    • East: Adjoined by Gondia district (Maharashtra).
    • West: Adjoined by Nagpur district (Maharashtra).
    • South: Adjoined by Chandrapur district (Maharashtra).

Topography and Natural Heritage

The terrain of Bhandara is marked by rolling hills and the life-giving Wainganga river.

  • Mountain Ranges: The district’s landscape is graced by the Ambagad mountain range (part of the Satpura range) in the southeast and the Gaikhuri mountain range running centrally. Prominent peaks include Kharr Pahari (2009 ft), Lendezhari (1490 ft), and Jamani (1722 ft).
  • Lifeblood River: The majestic Wainganga River flows through the district, its waters irrigating the fertile plains and supporting a rich ecosystem.

Land, Agriculture, and Economy

The district’s economic prosperity is rooted in its fertile soils and advanced agricultural practices, with rice cultivation being its hallmark.

  • Soil Diversity: The land is blessed with various soil types:
    • Kalikanhar & Morand: This premium, moisture-retentive soil found along the Wainganga river is deep and sticky, ideal for growing two crop cycles a year.
    • Sihar: A sandy-loam soil in the Wainganga valley, it is perfectly suited for high-quality rice cultivation.
    • Khadri & Bardi: Lighter soils used for cultivating less water-intensive rice varieties and other grains.
  • Primary Crops: Bhandara is a major producer of rice (paddy). Other important crops include wheat, jowar (sorghum), and linseed. The intricate network of lakes provides a unique and effective irrigation system, making agriculture the backbone of our local economy.
